        BMW's best driver's car? That would be this new BMW F87 M2 CS. The job BMW did on the model is admirable as it addresses the main complaint which is that the M2 Competition weighs as much (and more in certain trims) than an F82 M4.


        BMW gives the model lightweight 19 inch rims. The fronts weigh 20 pounds and the rears 22 pounds. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2's are optional.

        The carbon roof saves weight in an important area for handling. You also get a carbon fiber front splitter.

        That cool looking hood? It is carbon fiber as well.

        Carbon ceramic brakes are optional.

        So what does the M2 CS weigh in its lightest trim (manual) with carbon ceramic brakes? Well, no word on that from BMW just yet. Let's hope BMW really shed some serious pounds.

        The S55 motor is tweaked to 450 horsepower with software. There is upgraded cooling for the motor and transmission.


        The lightweight theme carries over to the interior where a carbon fiber center console reduce weight by six pounds. The contrasting stitching looks wonderful.


        You get four colors to choose from: Alpine White, Misano Blue Metallic, Black Sapphire Metallic, and Hockenheim Silver Metallic.

        More details to come like the price and that all important curb weight figure.

        This car looks like a serious win for BMW and it makes you wonder why the M2 could not be this car from the beginning. A fairly light, well balanced, and entry level BMW M car with a manual option should be a priority at M.

        • Carbon fiber vented hood (1/2 weight of steel hood, increases downforce and has cooling effect)

          Really nice with lots of potential. This could be the best M product in years IMO.

          Hopefully I'm wrong, but my guess is it results in -25lbs of carbon pieces and +75lbs of cooling and chasis bracing.

          Very nice, indeed but R&T doesn't think so. The 2020 car is Hyundai Veloster N! I'm still trying to swallow a front wheel drive plus LSD car to top everything else.....

          Not sure how I feel about the S55 still being used as opposed to the lower tune S58.... would have been a home run.

          Seems like BMW's entire thought process with the M2 is lets give it couple year old crap.

          Also price? Probably 85k? Which... puts it into many other cool car territory. A base GT500 2020 is gonna be its competition.

          That's a good point but this keeps costs lower and keeps the M3 exclusive with that powerplant. They already had trouble justifying the S55 to begin with so it got that absurd N55.

          They give this an S58 and a manual plus keep the weight to 33XX with 50/50 balance and who even needs an M3?

          Only by price. Totally different car that weighs almost 1000 pounds more. This might actually give you a real M driving experience which is hard to beat IMO. That M driving experience is what BMW made its name on.

          true my bad, I hadn't considered the weight. A GT350 or a Cayman Gt4 seem to be track orientated options. Both weigh a little more or substantially less.

          Ever since stepping back from owning a BMW, it just irritates me that every year, they come out with a CS, competition, CSL, GTS variation of the car.

          Didn't they poach a guy from BMW to build that car? Anyways I saw some posts from individual judges saying that they had the 992 C2S as their #1 and the Veloster as #2 . I think the contest shouldn't really be named "performance car of the year" if in the first paragraph they explain how it's not a competition of performance. Anyways...BMW still flubbed it.

          Well at least they sell them in the USA. I couldn't sleep when they released the E46 M3 CSL and would not bring it to the USA.

          They have diluted the meaning of the M brand and models though. Nothing feels special any longer.

          The turbo motors just made it too easy for them to throw on new software and charge more for it. It's lazy.

          That’s going to be tough - would mean >300lbs off the current M2C manual. I agree with BLKROKT that it will be 3500+. I don’t see anything that’s going to drop 300lbs.

          Website states 3,600 exactly for a manual. Regardless, is there really 100lbs of weight loss listed? Lighter wheels (great - best place to lose weight), hood, roof and some trim pieces. Couldn’t you already get it minus a sunroof? Just not a carbon roof?

          I assume so. I don't know these things like I used to. It sure took a while for BMW to build an interesting driver's car again.

          For lesser weight and about the same money (resumably the CS will be close to 70k ish), one would be better of with a used 991.2 Carrera+Cobb tune. Now, that's more like a driver car lol
