    I'll explain.

The current "wish list" has about $20k in electronics and wiring. Then theres the brakes, wheels (For drag strip), suspension, and some body work that are around $5k each.

My labor is free, so this is a relative bargain in car building world.

If you could start with either a $500 junk yard chassis, or a $200K exotic, and it's still going to cost you about $100k each to create a competent racing platform. If you are first to develop that platform, that budget can easily double or triple as you work in development and manufacturing of custom parts. I know of one professional team that took $XXk street cars...and spent close to $300k each to build them into class winning cars.

Now...that may seem really extreme...but that depends on your perspective. If you at the top of the "race car" slippery slope, that's a pretty daunting example. But if you are on your way down...or at the bottom...it doesn't seem so crazy once you've been around it. Then there are factory programs like Pratt & Miller that spend over $1M per car and you feel like a bum for complaining about a $30k electronics package.

This is why I stay clear of discussions of which stand alone ECU under $3k is the best, as I've been spoiled by high end hardware and tech support. Really good tech support is often more valuable than the best hardware....which I don't think most people take into account when looking at initial purchase prices. I really don't mind paying full MSRP if the service is phenomenal. (Service from Apex Speed Tech has been phenomenal for me)

Question, do I lose ABS and DSC if I go with a stand alone? I've been considering a Motec.

You lose DSC, but ABS can be retained with an amendment to the wiring harness.

I wrote up a detailed response on the benefits of switching from DSC to a high end ECU with proper traction control...but then lost it when I posted from an expired connection in my hotel room.

So in short: Change the tires, suspension, and power-train, and the DSC is not going to work as it was designed. With a good traction control system, you can tune for a highly modified car.

How deeply have you been looking into Motec?

I see. The brakes and wheels I understand of course.

What electronics and wiring do you still need?

Wish there a plug and play kit for our cars...It seems I might have to go Stand-A-Lone as well...

Still working that out in detail, but the short answer is everything to run the engine and transmission.

There's nothing PNP, but I would consider 4 options:

    • Vipec V88
    • AEM Infinity
    • Pectel SQ6
    • Motec M600

The most affordable would be the V88, and it can be setup to run a flex-fuel sensor.

I would like to retain ABS. Don't give a rats ass about DSC.

I've briefly looked at a M600 but haven't been really serious yet.

    It's all feasible...been done before.

Motec is going to give you some good driver developement tools if that's where you want to go with things.

I just want something safe for track use. I might try and see what Eurocharged can do but haven't made a decision yet. I know that I'm going to severe ties with my current tuner.

i need to determine if the MS45 can fit my needs.

Hopefully I don't drag too many people into that craziness!

Summary of the ENGINE electronics package as currently planned:

    • 71 Input channels (Including chassis inputs)
    • 47 Output channels
    • 27 Additional Sensors (In addition to 17 OEM sensors)

Then there's the transmission control which is about another 30 I/Os.

I think by the time I'm done this project, I'll never want to strip another Tefzel wire end again in my life! Don't they make machines for this?

I have to wonder, isn't a bit of overkill and making the project more complex and expensive than it needs to be for your goals?

This car is simply a platform for me to learn more about topics that I enjoy. The additional sensors and control functions are certainly not required for this car to run, but I wouldn't have much data to learn from.I have a list of un-answered questions which I'm determined to find the answers to. I think I will gain as much satisfaction from answering these questions, as from driving the car itself.

That's ultimately most satisfying and what it's about.

Not all, but most. If the name is on the list, it means I have acquired at the minimum all information available to the public. Many of the more well known brands have had their software installed on one of my computers....that's how I evaluate functionality.

    My first post here...

    Alan,
Great Thread! I just found this after following you at my330i.com. My 330i needs this kind of TLC but I can barely change a flat so I just sit on the sidelines.

Neel I must live right around the corner from you! I was wondering if you could recommend a good BMW mechanic on the westside? Just wondering nice to join you folks!

    Welcome to the forum!

Funny that you found my adventures on the other forum, as I don't publicly promote it's existence. I like to think of it as an "easter egg" for anyone that's willing to dig around enough.

Hopefully this thread will inspire you to become more involved with your own car?

    Enjoy in good health,

    Adam
