BMW celebrates 2012 DTM Championship with lamest special edition E92 M3 to date - Pointless $130,000 BMW M3 DTM Championship Edition

It seems like a new "special edition" M3 is launched every week making for cars that really aren't all that special or rare. Here is the latest one the BMW M3 DTM Championship Edition. This follows equally lame special edition M3's such as the M Performance Edition, Frozen Grey Edition, and the Lime Rock Edition. There are also other special editions for specific markets like China yet the one similarity among all of them is that they are incredibly underwhelming, overpriced, and pointless.

The price for this pile of BMW Marketing is 99,000 Euros or about $130,000. What does this get you? Frozen Black paint, matte black wheels, M stripes across the roof, some decals, and some extra badges on the inside. In other words, a complete joke.

How about taking the M3 GTS to an even higher level similar to how Porsche improves on upon the 911 GT3 with REAL special edition models? Maybe do an M3 GTS-R? I mean call it whatever you want but how about a real special edition to celebrate your awesome victory with something along the lines of a sharpened M3 GTS? Low weight, no-nonsense, with more power and more displacement. Not just some different paint and stickers, Pep Boys could make a special edition M3 by those standards.

The E92 M3 GTS and E90 M3 CRT are real special edition M3's worthy of their price tag. What BMW is giving us here is complete garbage and whatever sucker BMW convinces to pay over $100k for this car should have their head examined. Have some damn self-respect BMW, this is crap and you know it.

BMW M celebrates DTM triumph with BMW M3 DTM Champion Edition model.

Munich, Germany - December 5, 2012... BMW Motorsport returned to the DTM in 2012 after almost 20 years away, and the results in its comeback year exceeded all expectations. Canadian driver Bruno Spengler won the drivers' title, BMW Team Schnitzer finished in top spot in the team standings, and BMW claimed the manufacturers' honours.

BMW M GmbH is celebrating this success with the unveiling of the BMW M3 DTM Champion Edition. Mimicking the looks of Spengler's racing car, this special-edition model is available exclusively in Frozen Black metallic, while the carbon flaps and gurney, various dark chrome elements, matt black wheels and sections of the race car's livery also betray its close links with the triumphant BMW M3 DTM. The theme is continued by the BMW M stripe design over the CFRP roof and boot lid, BMW M logo to the rear of the front wheel arches and decals in the rear side windows. Inside the car, the door sill strips replicate Spengler's helmet design and the carbon-fibre interior trim strip bears the newly crowned champion's signature and the car's serial number. The special-edition model also contains various exclusive interior additions, such as the Alcantara® steering wheel, handbrake lever embroidered with "M Power" lettering, and extended black Novillo leather trim with features in contrasting Palladium Silver.

Technical elements like the Competition package, M Drive, M DCT Drivelogic and the M Driver's Package underline the car's focus on high performance. Equipment including the Professional navigation system, heated seats and Park Distance Control add more "everyday" ingredients to the model.

BMW M is also offering the 54 new custodians of the BMW M3 DTM Champion Edition – which will be available in various international markets – a very special extra. Owners of this automotive rarity will have the chance to attend the BMW M Fascination Nordschleife driver training course under the watchful eye of Bruno Spengler. One of the most coveted elements of the BMW Driving Experience programme, the course is held on the Nürburgring's legendary Nordschleife track, where BMW M cars are put through extremely exacting testing sessions and final chassis tuning is carried out.

The BMW M3 DTM Champion Edition will be built at BMW's Regensburg plant and the BMW M GmbH factory from February 2013. Prices in Germany start from €99,000.00 including VAT.

The BMW Group is one of the most successful manufacturers of automobiles and motorcycles in the world with its BMW, MINI, Husqvarna Motorcycles and Rolls-Royce brands. I like the looks but agree 100% about the car being a joke. It SHOULD'VE been an e92 CSL on steroids...

MOTIV750, MOTIV P-1000 PI, MOTIV/FUEL-IT! low pressure fuel system, AEM EMS/COBB AP, Aquamist HFS-3, ETS FMIC, SPEC stage 3+ clutch/SS flywheel, BC Racing coilovers and VMR wheels wrapped in Hankook RS3s.

So that would be with the E36 then as that is the only M car (not SUV) to have an automatic.

No, it isn't, or they wouldn't call it DCT which stands for a dual clutch transmission. It has an automated mode, along with manual modes.

Yeah I agree. This is a joke! They should never have backed out of making a CSL version of the E92 M3.

Too bad so sad. I guess im going to stick to my future plans of an ordinary no ZCP 2010+ E90 M3.

All these "limited" editions are a joke. Nothing special to all these limited edition cars. What they should do is bring the GTS and CRT stateside.

Should have had a S85 and fully built suspension. Color with the M stripes looks good.

I dont understand why BMW makes these models with names like DTM that should be backed up with extreme factory mods....When I hear its a DTM edition I would expect a wider body, wheels and amped suspension and wheels and interior, but this car is just another nicely optioned M3 to me. Sad.

That's because that is all it is.

Oh man, imagine a built S85 under the hood. 5.7 liters or so. Oh baby...

Yeah thats what I am talking about. Stroked S85 in a E92 or E90 M3 would be off the hook. Hartge has done a S85 in a regular E92 which was quite sick but a stroked V10 with some MTs would pull crazy numbers. Theres a E46 M3 with a S85 on youtube that looks pretty darn quick. I was planning on doing a widebody 993 next year sometime but might consider the S85 in a M3 project as prices for both used engine and donar car will be lower with new models coming out. Just got to figure out a way to put the DCT in a S85 eventho I prefer the raw SMG feel.

I don't think you can do the DCT with the S85. Nobody has done it yet, all swaps are either manual or SMG.
