Right now they will check the valve train, if i have to pull the head i am just gonna buy a used low mileage engine.
It should be a lot cheaper to fix a valve than replacing the engine if this is the problem. The risk for a blown piston is quite high though compared to a valve leak.

If its the piston i am just gonna buy a low mileage second hand engine , need to check car prices in other to sell and buy something different. Easier to put it stock now. Still deciding though...
car never run strong after the rebuild so would prefer to just ditch the old engine.

An imortant desision will be to continue using TD's or not. They don't provide a lot of top end while making huge cylinder pressure in lower midrange. This increase the engine stress a lot compared to RB's. IMHO

I looked at some pictures and the two brands seem to have the same size compressor and turbine wheels, so there should be no difference between them.

My engine after the rebuild never got back the punch it had before. I think the cylinder head work done on it was bad and might as well be the cause in the long run of a failure somewhere. They are going to update me on the valve train status today. I also found an engine with 45.000 km in excellent condition with a 1 year warranty builddate feb 2008.

The pics I saw way back when made it pretty clear that they used a smaller turbine, compressor could be the similar/same though. Sorry about the engine man, my bet is on ringland (one cylinders rings or valve seat not sealing would be odd).

    One post for day.

well turns out the cylinder wall on 5 is damaged and probably a ring as well. There are no signs of detonation, the shop thinks that when they rebuilded the engine the tolerance between new pistons and walls of the new block where maybe to tight on 5 so with the heat it started eating up the wall at top of the piston travel see pictures.

They just fitted a second hand complete engine with 25K miles on it. Tomorrow they fire it up.

So isn't that their fault? So their rebuild was not successful?

I was not aware the N54 had free floating cylinder walls; for some reason I thought it was a closed deck design...

Wow that's annoying! I feel for you mate. Fingers crossed you get it to drive again quickly.

When a friend of mine did a rebuild of his engine, he had to drive in very low revs for at least 1000 miles, and then the engine was taken apart again and completely measured whether the pistons etc. were the right size. They also had to re-hone it ever so slightly, and now the engine has to be broken in again. It would seem that your shop skipped the second step, and now it's revealed that the internals did not completely fit. For me it's clear that it's their fault, even if the fault was only revealed after that warranty expired.

no, going to keep it a bit fully tuned . i dont have the cash for a different car with better performance so either buy a slow car or keep it.
Yes the fault is 99% the shop but they probably wont refound me anything . Going to send them pictures anyway and complain.
